Debuting with Brown Sugar in 1995, D’Angelo – born Michael Eugene Archer – began his career by courting comparison to the likes of Jimmy Hendrix, Marvin Gaye and Prince. The R&B singer-songwriter, instrumentalist and producer found super-stardom with the single “Untitled”. Occasional sabbaticals from the business and a notable reluctance to speak to the press, with only brief guest appearances years prior to a 2012 tour, D’Angelo has found great success in developing his own cult of status. A long-anticipated and much discussed third album, a collaboration with multiple artists include Questlove of The Roots, is said to be released within the year.
